How To Properly Store Pie

We have officially entered pie season–the most delicious season of them all! And with lots of holiday events coming up, comes a greater chance at having delicious leftovers (score!). From pumpkin to apple and everything in between, all pies should be handled differently when it comes to storing them. Make sure to follow these pie storing tips to ensure you can indulge in these delicious treats the safe way:

Fruit Pies:
Apple, blueberry and cherry too–All of your pies with fruit fillings can remain covered and stored at room temperature for up to two days after they’re baked. After that, it’s important to keep them in the fridge for another two days of storage. If they’re still lingering after the four day mark, it’s best to toss them! Not going to finish that pie in four days? No problem–fruit pies are one of the few types that actually freeze well. Place them uncovered in the freezer until frozen solid, then wrap in plastic wrap or foil and place back in the freezer for up to four months. When you’re ready to chow down, thaw them at room temperature for one hour and then reheat at 375°F for about 30 minutes.

Pumpkin & Pecan:
Since pumpkin and pecan pie contain eggs in their filling, these must always be kept in the refrigerator. If you’re trying to get a head start on the pie prep, you can prepare them during the week and store the pie in the refrigerator for up to four days before serving. Make sure to wrap the pie in aluminum foil and ensure that your fridge is set to 38°F to avoid the risk of any illnesses.

Cream, Mousse & Custard Pies
These fan favorites are usually a staple at the holiday dessert table.  While they don’t freeze well, you can keep them covered in the fridge for up to four days. You should hold off on topping them with whipped cream until you’re ready to serve to ensure the ultimate level of freshness (and deliciousness).

How To Choose The Best Refrigerator For Your Home

If you’re in the market for a new refrigerator, shopping can be really overwhelming due to all of the new options. Not only are there multiple options when it comes to color and capacity, but you’ll also need to make decisions regarding everything from finish and shelf configuration to touch screens. This guide will help you narrow down your choices to choose the best unit for your home:

Determine the Size:

For many homeowners, space is at the top of their refrigerator wish list. Depending on the size of your family, how much you entertain and how much you eat at home, the capacity you’ll  need will vary. Once you determine the unit size to best suit the needs of your family, make sure it will actually fit in your kitchen, including having enough space to open your doors and pull out your drawers.

Exterior appearance:
If you’re looking for a sleek finish, consider stainless steel. If a light and airy feel works best with your kitchen decor, be on the lookout for white finishes. Refrigerators come in a variety of colors, so determine which will go best with your kitchen and continue your search.

Check Inside:
Many higher-end refrigerators give homeowners the ability to maintain different climates within the same refrigerator. Some even provide precise temperatures for sensitive ingredients such as produce, meats and cheese. If these factors are important to you, narrow down your hunt for the perfect fridge by searching for makes that offer these features. If you’re big in entertaining, look for fridges with flexibility in their shelving and drawers. Many manufacturers now offer shelving that pulls out and can accommodate larger platters and trays.

Extra Features:
Smart refrigerators recently came on the scene, offering features like touch screens, recipe lists and food trackers. These can also be connected to your tablets and smartphones for added convenience. Other extras you might be interested in is a built in filtered water and ice maker or even a hot water dispenser for tea and coffee. What will they think of next?

How To Properly Move a Refrigerator

Moving to a new living space can come with an array of frustrations, and dealing with heavy appliances will likely being your biggest obstacle to overcome. Refrigerators can be especially difficult to move based on their sheer size and weight. If you’re looking to move and don’t have the help of a professional moving company, fear not! We’re here to help. Here are some tips on how to properly move your most used (and largest!) home appliance:

  1. Remove all items: Remove everything from the inside of your refrigerator and freezer, including all food and contents of the unit. Don’t forget exterior items like magnets and notices as well!
  2. Defrost: After everything has been removed, unplug it from the wall and allow all of the ice in the freezer to melt. A good time to do this would be overnight, as it can take hours. Make sure to tape the power cord to the side of the unit to avoid tripping during the moving process.
  3. Clean it: Now that your refrigerator has been defrosted, dry the inside thoroughly with a towel. Once it’s dry, make sure to wipe it down with a cleaner to prevent mold, mildew and odors forming during the move.
  4. Secure the doors: Use bungee cords or rope to secure the doors and make sure they don’t move during the process. Its very important not to skip this step to avoid any injury from occurring.
  5. Load it onto a dolly: Slide the dolly right underneath the base and make sure the back of the dolly is firmly pressed against the refrigerator– then, tie it in place with moving straps.
  6. Load it onto the truck: Once the refrigerator is securely positioned on the dolly, tip it back and begin making your way to the truck with one person in back and one person in front helping to guide the process. Always move forward, or opposite the position that the refrigerator is tilted, to maintain optimal safety. It is important that the refrigerator stays upright so that oil from the compressor does not mix with the coolant.
  7. Unload it: Use the same steps you took to get your refrigerator onto the truck, to unload it. Plug it in immediately and give it at least a full 24 hours to cool to a sufficient temperature before putting any perishable food in it. Enjoy your new home and give yourself a high five, because this was no easy feat!

What Causes Refrigerator Condensation?

Do you notice that every time you open up your refrigerator, you see condensation covering the ceiling, shelves, crisper, and containers inside? Excessive condensation can be frustrating, especially when you’re not sure where it’s coming from. Condensation occurs when warm, humid air comes in contact with a cold surface. As the warm air cools, it releases moisture in the form of water droplets. Experiencing some is fine, but when your refrigerator is constantly a wet mess, you could have a problem:  Here are some reasons for condensation in your fridge:

speedy sub zero manhasset

Faulty Gasket: This is the most likely reason for extra condensation in your fridge. The rubber seal around your door is responsible for keeping out warm air, but have a tendency to wear out quickly due to frequent use. A good test to check is to close your refrigerator door with a piece of paper inside. If you can pull that paper out with no problem, it’s time for a new gasket.

Clogged Drain Pipe: Having a clogged drain pipe doesn’t mean that you will necessarily experience condensation in your fridge, but can certainly lead to a pool of water forming at the bottom of your unit. If the pipe is clogged by ice, you can melt it with a hair dryer for quick relief. If it is clogged by something else, try using a straw to dislodge the item, or give your local professionals a call.

Hot Food: Food that is still hot and then goes straight into your fridge can be a cause of experiencing extra water droplets all over your refrigerator. Placing food in the fridge without giving it a chance to cool down first also raises your refrigerator’s temperature, making it work harder to keep cooler. This can not only put a strain on your unit, but can increase your energy bills as well.
