Our refrigerators work 24/7 to keep our food cold, so it is inevitable that they will run into some problems at one point or another. Luckily for you, many of these issues don’t require professional service. Here are some DIY solutions to three common problems you might encounter.
Problem: Refrigerator is too warm.
Solution: Check your thermostat settings.
Nearly every refrigerator comes with a thermostat for users to adjust their refrigerator’s temperature. If your fridge is too warm, the solution could be as simple as adjusting the thermostat. Program it for a lower setting and wait 24 hours to see if your refrigerator reflects the temperature change.
Problem: Water is puddling in my fridge.
Solution: Unclog the drain tube.
In many cases, water puddling inside your refrigerator appears to be a bigger problem than it actually is. Unplug your refrigerator and remove the crisper drawers at the bottom – you should see the drain tube on the back wall. Use a hair dryer to melt the ice or a Q-Tip to remove the clog. Flush the tube with warm water and replace it; your leak should be gone.
Problem: My refrigerator keeps cycling on and off.
Solution: Clean your condenser coils.
Frequent refrigerator cycling often indicates dirty condenser coils. These coils are located on the back of your refrigerator and are responsible for releasing warm air. Over time, they can accumulate a thick coating of dust and animal hair, which hinders their ability to vent heat. Clean these condenser coils every six months using the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner.
