New Year Fridge Food Swaps: NFL Playoff Edition

One of the biggest New Year’s resolutions people make is the promise to eat healthy and lose weight. While some decide to start fad diets that are expensive and potentially harmful to your health, the smarter choice is to restock your fridge with better food options. These are some great New Year fridge food swaps to help you improve your eating habits just in time for the NFL Playoffs.

When you sit down to watch your team’s big game, we bet you’re going to want to smother some chicken wings with ranch, blue cheese dressing, or buffalo sauce. Sadly, these condiments are seriously high in calories. Swap them out for healthier, still-delicious options like chili sauce, seasoning blends, and vinegar sauces.

Bench sugary, high-calorie sodas and hydrate like Odell Beckham Jr. does – with a cool, crisp glass of water. You can figure out how much water to drink by dividing your weight in two and consuming that number of ounces of water each day. Drinking enough water is essential to helping your body function and maintaining a healthy weight. Do you think Tom Brady is able to play the way he does by drinking Diet Coke every day? (Answer: Probably not.)

Frozen Meals
There is not a single NFL player who got to where he is by eating frozen meals. Even meals that are labeled as “healthy” are loaded with sodium, preservatives, and artificial ingredients. You won’t be able to achieve any weight loss if you eat these. Aim to prepare and freeze homemade meals once a week or month for a healthy option that lets you get back to watching your favorite players.

Frozen Treats
Ice cream seems like a great way for you and your family to celebrate a big win, but those treats are packed full of fat. Instead, “go for two”, and choose whole fruit sorbets. You can even kick it up a notch and make your own sorbet by freezing fruits and blending them until smooth. We bet that’s how your MVP will celebrate so he keeps himself in perfect shape.

You may think it will be hard to lose weight during the playoffs, but these easy fridge food swaps will help make your game time healthier than past seasons. Keep the swaps going for the rest of the year, and you can have the same muscle mass as a QB in no time.

Make sure your fridge is ready for all these food swaps, and call Speedy Sub Zero Repair for any and all refrigerator repairs needs. We provide same-day Sub Zero refrigerator service within one hour to all of Long Island and New York City 24/7/365. Call us toll-free at 1-866-782-9376.

How To Prepare Your Refrigerator For Holiday Travel

The holiday season is a busy one for traveling. If you’re packing your bags and hitting the road this month you might be wondering what to do with everything in your fridge. Make sure your refrigerator is ready for your holiday travel with these tips:

Long Weekend

If you’re skipping away for a short trip for a long weekend or a few days, here are some basic steps you should take:

Check expiration dates — Expired milk, cheese, eggs, cream and meat, can produce some nasty smells. Toss any perishables so you can come home to a pleasant smelling house.

Raise the temperature — With at-risk perishables gone, turn the temperature up a degree or two to save some energy. Just remember to always keep it as close to 40°F as possible.

If you’re extending your holiday vacay for up to 10 days, avoid a fridge disaster with these tips:

Buy fewer groceries — It’s better to run out of food before a trip than to waste what you have.

Remove most perishables — Unless you just bought your milk and veggies, they’ll probably be spoiled by the time you return.

Freeze your meat — Freezing your meat will help extend it’s shelf life. Thaw and eat it when you get home.

Get rid of leftovers — If you haven’t eaten it by now, you definitely won’t eat it when it’s back. The less you have in your fridge, the more pleasant it will be to come home to.

Turn up the temperature — Unless you plan to leave some perishables in the fridge, you should raise the temperature of the fridge to about 38 degrees Fahrenheit; this ensures coolness and longevity for perishable goods, and also helps save on energy costs.

Tidying up your kitchen is one of the quickest ways to get your home holiday ready. Pay attention to your refrigerator, by giving it a thorough wipe down and tossing items that are past their expiration date. This will not only ensure that you’ve rid your fridge or spoiled items, but will make extra room for the holiday leftovers you’re bound to have. It’s also a good idea to set your table in advance. Organizing the place settings day before your dinner will save you time and stress.

Be sure you have what you need:

The last thing you want to happen is discover you’re missing a key ingredient right before your guests arrive. Double check to make sure  that you have everything on your list a few days before your holiday fete, which will give you optimal time to make a trip to the store.

Invest in a cooler:

Since you’ll undoubtedly be busy in the kitchen the day of your gathering, the last thing you’ll want is guests coming in and out . Setting up a cooler in the living room will allow them to help themselves to a cold beverage and will keep everyone out of your sacred space as you finishing preparing the meal.

The Best No Bake Desserts For the Holidays

If you’re heading to a holiday party this month, you know you can’t show up empty handed. These delicious no-bake recipes are the easiest and most delicious ways to make your host happy:

Red Velvet Cheesecake Bites

  • 16 oz. cream cheese, softened
  • 16 oz. white chocolate, melted
  • 1 box red velvet cake mix or 2 cups red velvet cake crumbs

  • In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat cream cheese until creamy. Add melted white chocolate and continue beating until creamy. Transfer to the freezer to harden, 1 hour.
  • Meanwhile, bake cake according to package directions. Let cool, then crumble into fine crumbs on a baking sheet.
  • Scoop out small balls of mixture and use your hands to form the mixture into truffles.
  • Roll mixture in red velvet crumbs, then transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Once all truffles are rolled, transfer to the refrigerator to chill and harden, at least 1 hour.

Candy Cane Pretzel Bark

  • Waffle pretzels
  • 1 – 16 ounce package white chocolate
  • Crushed candy canes

  • Line a 15×10 baking sheet with foil. Make sure the ends of the foil wrap around the pan, so it doesn’t move. Lay the pretzels end to end covering the entire pan as much as you can.
  • Melt the chocolate. Gently pour over the pretzels on the pan. Use an angled spatula to evenly and gently spread the chocolate over all the pretzels. Sprinkle with candy canes  and let set. Break apart into single pretzels or bigger squares of pretzels.

Hot Chocolate Krispy Treats

  • 1 ½ tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 ¾ c miniature marshmallows
  • 4 ½ c Chocolate Toast Crunch cereal
  • 2 tbsp mallow bits

  • Generously coat a 9”-square pan with cooking spray.
  • Melt the butter in a large pot over medium-low heat. Once the butter has melted, add the miniature marshmallows, and stir constantly with a spatula until the marshmallows have melted. Remove the pot from the heat, and stir in the cereal. If the mixture begins to harden before the cereal is fully incorporated, return the pot over the lowest heat setting, and carefully stir until the cereal is coated with the melted marshmallows.
  • Evenly spread the cereal into the prepared pan using a spatula coated in cooking spray or your hands coated in cooking spray. Sprinkle the mallow bits on top, and gently press them into the cereal to make them stick. Wait to slice until after the cereal has cooled completely.
