What Is Refrigerant Poisoning, and How Is It Caused?

When it comes to home health hazards, we’re sure you’ve heard of lead poisoning, mold poisoning, and carbon monoxide poisoning. But have you ever heard of refrigerant poisoning? This lesser-known hazard can cause some major damage to your health if you don’t know the causes and warning signs, so it’s best to educate and protect yourself sooner rather than later.

What is refrigerant poisoning?

In short, refrigerant poisoning occurs when a person is exposed to the chemicals used to cool appliances such as your refrigerator. One of the harmful chemicals in refrigerant is Freon, a tasteless, odorless gas that can cut off oxygen to your cells and lungs.

What are the symptoms of refrigerant poisoning?

In mild to moderate cases of exposure, you may experience:

  • Eyes, ears, and throat irritation
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Frostbite — if exposed to liquid Freon
  • Chemical burns to skin

If you’ve been severely exposed to refrigerant and the chemicals in it, you may experience:

  • Fluid buildup or bleeding in your lungs
  • Vomiting blood
  • Decreased mental state
  • Burning sensations in your esophagus
  • Seizures

If you experience any of the listed symptoms, immediately call the National Poison Control Hotline at 1-800-222-1222.

How to Avoid Refrigerant Poisoning?

If you’re going to be working on appliances that contain refrigerant, always make sure to cover your skin and wear long clothing. However, unless you’re a trained technician, you shouldn’t be handling those areas of your appliances. For your safety, leave any fridge and freezer repairs to the professionals.

At Speedy Subzero Repairs, we are fully trained and licensed to understand the safety precautions necessary to deal with refrigerant-using appliances. If you’re in need of refrigerator or freezer repairs on Long Island or in Queens or NYC, don’t risk your health by making it a DIY-job. Give us a call instead at 866-782-9376.

Why is My Freezer So Noisy?

When you have guests over, where is one of the first places they usually go? Your kitchen, of course! Food is one of the easiest ways to anyone’s heart. But doesn’t it kill the mood when you’re trying to enjoy an afternoon with friends and your conversation is overshadowed by a loud freezer? If your freezer is so noisy that it’s disturbing your kitchen and home, these may be some reasons why.

Why is my freezer so noisy?

Overworked Compressor

Normally, your freezer’s compressor runs around 80-90% of the time when it’s cooling, producing a low humming noise. However, if you pack your freezer to near-capacity, your compressor will work harder to cool the entire space, therefore creating a louder buzz. The buzz could also be a lot louder if you’re constantly opening and closing your freezing since this lets cold air out and causes your compressor to work harder to keep food cold.

Dirty Condenser Coils

As your condenser runs, dust and grime from around your fridge can build up on the coils, causing a restriction in airflow. This causes your condenser work harder to get cool air to your freezer, making it noisier than usual. Usually cleaning the coils will help improve the problem — and that’s great since Speedy has a $39.95 summer cleaning special!

Why is My Refrigerator Not Dispensing Water?

A big perk of modern refrigerators is your water dispenser. It gives you the convenience of cold, filtered water and keeps you from wasting countless plastic bottles. But neither of those things are bottle is your refrigerator doesn’t dispense water to begin with. If you’re experiencing this problem, these may be some reasons why.

Why is My Refrigerator Not Dispensing Water?

Frozen Water Tube

This can be diagnosed by trying to run air through the tube in the door and seeing if it passes through. If it doesn’t, the tube will have to be thawed to allow water to flow through it again.

Fault Water Inlet Valve

The water inlet valve opens to allow water into the dispenser. The valve stops opening if it becomes faulty or if there isn’t enough water pressure. Fixing this problem involves replacing the valve and/or adjusting the water pressure to the proper level.

Faulty Dispenser Control Board

The control board in your fridge is in charge of most of the functions of you water dispensing system. If it’s faulty, the entire system could stop working. There may be only one part that’s not working, so each part will have to be tested.

Clogged Water Filter

If your refrigerator’s water filter is clogged, it can prevent your water dispenser from working. Make sure to replace your filter twice a year to avoid this problem and keep your water clean.

If your refrigerator isn’t dispensing water, call the experts at Speedy Subzero Repairs for help. How to Prevent Frost Buildup in Your Freezer

Your freezer is your main way of storing and keeping food fresh. Frost buildup takes up your storage space, not to mention makes it harder to close your freezer door, which can lead to more serious damage. Luckily, there are a few simple steps you can take to prevent frost from building up in the first place.

Preventing Frost Buildup:

  • Keep your freezer away from hot appliances. If your freezer is located near your hot water heater or furnace, it will feel that heat and work harder to keep cool, often resulting in frost buildup.
  • Pack it well. If your freezer is too full or too empty, the temperature won’t regulate well. Also, smaller items freezer better, so break up large food packages into smaller ones.
  • Dry food before you put it into your freezer. If there is any condensation on food packaging or you just washed some produce, make sure these items are totally dry before putting them into your freezer.
  • Don’t put hot items in your freezer. It may be tempting to make pasta sauce and immediately put it in the freezer for future occasions, but hot foods will become frostbitten or cause frost buildup. Wait until those items are room temperature instead.
  • Take care of the seal. Clean it regularly to remove any food particles, using bleach or vinegar if there is any mold on it. If you notice the seal is torn or damaged, call Speedy to replace it for you. (Remember: We stock 99% of parts in our “warehouse on wheels,” so we’ll get the job done quickly and efficiently.)
  • Give your freezer some space. Don’t push it too close to the wall, as this will restrict the airflow and prevent the coils from cooling your unit properly.

If your freezer does develop frost buildup, call Speedy Subzero Repairs. We offer refrigerator and freezer repair services within the hour for homes on Long Island and in Queens. We’ve been providing high-quality service since 1946 and always stand behind our work, so you know you can trust us. For more information or to schedule a service, call us at 866-782-9376.
