The Danger of Dirty Refrigerator Coils

Imagine you had the task of running a mile around a track in under 10 minutes. You’re in pretty good shape, so you take off without problems. But as time goes on, you’re made to wear a weighted vest as you run that gets heavier each half a mile you run. You would’ve been fine when you first started out on your own, but now outside factors are weighing you down and making it harder to complete your task. By the time you finish, you’re about near ready to collapse. That’s exactly what it’s like for a fridge to run with dirty refrigerator coils.

The Science Behind It

The coils on the back of your refrigerator work under the second law of thermodynamics. That basically means that when two different things are near each other at different temperatures, the hotter one will cool and the colder one warms. In terms of your fridge, gas refrigerant is pushed through the coils, cools and liquefies. There it soaks up the heat in your fridge and freezer and cools everything inside it.

What That Means

When your coils are covered in dust, pet hair, and other grime, that thermodynamic process we mentioned is seriously hindered. Dirty coils prevent your fridge from cooling, resulting in spoiled food. If your unit is still able to cool at all, it’s going to work a lot harder than it should, causing major wear and tear.

If you find that dirty refrigerator coils are causing damage to your refrigerator, call Speedy Subzero Repairs. We offer 24/7 refrigerator repair services, and can even get to your home within the hour if you’re on Long Island or in Queens. Fridge Repairs You Shouldn’t Make Yourself

As a homeowner, being a DIY-er is a skill to be proud of. You should take pride in being able to make repairs around your home. However, there are certain fridge repairs that you shouldn’t be taking care of on your own. When it comes to your fridge, these repairs should be left to the professionals.

Frost Buildup

If you open your freezer and see a wall of ice and frost, you’re most likely looking at a problem with the defrosting process. This can be caused by a heater, fuse, switch, or sensor. Many of these repairs involve more complicated repairs methods than simply replacing a part, and often require you to get into some unfamiliar nooks and crannies of your fridge. For the safety of you and your unit, issues with your defrosting process are best left to the professionals.

No Water in the Dispenser

A lack of water in your dispenser can be a sign of a valve problem. While the issue may stem from a clogged filter or another minor problem, it could be a problem with the water supply line. If that’s the case, you should avoid tampering with the line and call the professionals to inspect what’s preventing water from getting to the dispenser.

Any Problem You Don’t Know Much About

Changing a filter is one thing, but trying to diagnose, much less fix, a bigger problem with your fridge is not a good idea. No amount of YouTube tutorials can compare to the knowledge a factory-trained technician has.

If you’re in need of fridge or freezer repairs, call Speedy Subzero Repairs. We’ve been servicing Sub-Zero refrigerators since 1946 and stand behind all of our work. For more information or to schedule a service, call us at 866-782-9376.

Why Is My Fridge Not Cold?

We’ve all seen the movie scenes in which a person stands in front of their fridge to get some cool relief from the summer heat. But what happens when your fridge isn’t cold? Now, not only can you not get a breath of cold air (pun intended) but your food also isn’t being stored properly and can spoil. (Clearly, one of those things in more important than the other.) If your fridge isn’t cold, one of these issues might be the reason why.

Faulty Door Gaskets

The door gaskets are there to make sure your fridge is fully sealed every time you close it. If the gaskets are torn or broken, air can leak out of your fridge, resulting in it being warmer than it should be. Speedy can quickly replace your gaskets so they’re as good as new.

Faulty Temperature Control

Temperature control is a common reason why your fridge wouldn’t be cold. If your thermostat is simply set too high, you can adjust it to the right setting. However, if it is set to the correct temperature, and your fridge still isn’t cold, you may have to call Speedy to replace the temperature control panel.

Inadequate Air Flow

If you pack your fridge to the point of near capacity, there won’t be enough space for air to flow through your unit, and your food won’t be cooled evenly. In the same regard, if you skip your grocery shopping and there is very little food in your fridge, your unit could also not work efficiently.

Refrigerant Leak

Though this isn’t as common, if your refrigerant leaks, your fridge won’t work properly. You’ll need to call a service technician to help you with this one. If you’re on Long Island, call Speedy!

Why Is Water Pooling in My Refrigerator?

Have you ever gone to get something out of your refrigerator only to see a pool of water sitting in or under your crisper drawer? While it may seem like just a mess you have to clean up, it could mean your refrigerator needs a repair. If you notice water pooling, you probably have an issue with your defrost drain or tube.

What’s Wrong with the Defrost Tube?

Every time your refrigerator runs its defrost cycle, excess water collects in the tube and goes through the drain down to the condenser pan to be evaporated back into the air. This process ensures that your fridge doesn’t get any frost buildup. Sometimes, food debris or ice can clog the valves, the collection cup, or the drain tub itself, resulting in pooling water on the bottom of your refrigerator.

How Do I Fix This?

In order to fix this problem, you would need to flush out the drain in your fridge. This involves moving your fridge and locating the drain tube to start. You also may end up having to remove the back panel or kick plate of your refrigerator to find the tube.  Moving your fridge isn’t always safe –  especially if you’re doing it on your own – which is all the more reason to call the professionals at Speedy for help.

If your drain pipe isn’t the problem, you could also have a cracked or damaged drain pan that is spilling water onto your floor. Since this is a more serious problem, you’ll want to have the pan replaced right away.

The professionals at Speedy Sub Zero Repairs can get you drain tube defrosted or drain pan replaced the same day you call us — we even offer service within the hour! We have over 75 years of refrigerator and freezer repair experience, so call us today for more information or to schedule a service at 866-782-9376.
