Refrigerator Cleaning Checklist

This summer your refrigerator is going to be working overtime. Between storing all of your BBQ leftovers and stocking up on treats to stay cool, your fridge is probably the most used appliance in your home. Why not show it some love and appreciation with a thorough cleaning? You might think you got the technique down cold (pun totally intended!), but here are some tips to help leave your refrigerator sparkling clean.

Step #1: Remove all of the food

The entire fridge cleaning process shouldn’t take you too long, but if you’re worried about meat or dairy spoiling, store them in a cooler to keep them fresh.

Step #2: Clean the crispers and bins

Now that your fridge is empty, remove all of the shelves and drawers and scrub them in the sink with soap and warm water. For tougher stains, use a steel wool pad and raise the water temperature. This should help to loosen up any caked on residue.

Step #3: Vacuum it out

It can be hard to thoroughly pick up all of the loose crumbs in your fridge. That’s where a vacuum comes in handy! After sucking up the tiny morsels, use a wet cloth with a mild dish soap to wipe down the interior of your refrigerator and then thoroughly dry it off.

Step #4: Refill

Once your shelves are dry, you can start re-stocking your fridge. Organize like items together and pay close attention to your food’s expiration dates, tossing out anything outdated.

Step #5: Don’t forget about the outside

Wipe down any stains, dirt, dust or fingerprints from the outside of your refrigerator as well. For enameled steel, you can use a multi-surface solution and paper towels, but stainless steel should be treated with a damp microfiber cloth and distilled white vinegar. Make sure to rub in the direction of the grain to avoid scratching, too!
