What Causes Refrigerator Condensation?

Do you notice that every time you open up your refrigerator, you see condensation covering the ceiling, shelves, crisper, and containers inside? Excessive condensation can be frustrating, especially when you’re not sure where it’s coming from. Condensation occurs when warm, humid air comes in contact with a cold surface. As the warm air cools, it releases moisture in the form of water droplets. Experiencing some is fine, but when your refrigerator is constantly a wet mess, you could have a problem:  Here are some reasons for condensation in your fridge:

Faulty Gasket: This is the most likely reason for extra condensation in your fridge. The rubber seal around your door is responsible for keeping out warm air, but have a tendency to wear out quickly due to frequent use. A good test to check is to close your refrigerator door with a piece of paper inside. If you can pull that paper out with no problem, it’s time for a new gasket.

Clogged Drain Pipe: Having a clogged drain pipe doesn’t mean that you will necessarily experience condensation in your fridge, but can certainly lead to a pool of water forming at the bottom of your unit. If the pipe is clogged by ice, you can melt it with a hair dryer for quick relief. If it is clogged by something else, try using a straw to dislodge the item, or give your local professionals a call.

Hot Food: Food that is still hot and then goes straight into your fridge can be a cause of experiencing extra water droplets all over your refrigerator. Placing food in the fridge without giving it a chance to cool down first also raises your refrigerator’s temperature, making it work harder to keep cooler. This can not only put a strain on your unit, but can increase your energy bills as well.
